Kanika and I met several years ago well I think it was 2010 or 11 ? I found her through her blog and discovered that she stayed in the same society as mine in Pune and invited me over to her house to show/introduce me to Anek designs And thats how we became friends , we both pretty much loved and cribbed about the same things. Over random morning walks we discussed life , other blogs , designers , her days in NID, our life in Delhi, how we should be staying in Koregaon Park and not anywhere else.
She hosted some amazing parties , took me shopping to some cool places, made me a lovely Kantha jacket ( btw she has a super infectious laugh and beautiful curly hair). She moved on to Mumbai then London but we kept in touch because some friendships survive distance and time and as they say it takes a long time to grow old friends.
Anek designs is a lovely name and why I love it even more is how it brings together the names of its husband and wife founders – Kanika and Vivek.
So here is what Kanika had to say :
Design Inspiration : Designsponge , Decor8 , Ohjoy, Rangdecor, Artnlight …… blogs that gave me the push to start on my own
Must have Indian homedeco items :
- A traditional hand made rug be it Kilim , Punja Durrie, Namdah , Kalamkari or Kashmiri handknotted carpet
- Jaipuri Razai
- Kantha pillows
- Athangudi tiles
- Cotton blockprints from Rajasthan
- Brassware of Moradabad
- Cane basketry from Northeastern states
Most memorable and fun moment in NID :
When a batchmate picked me up, carried me for quite a distance and threw me in a mud pit during Holi. I felt like a Bollywood heroine. I had never been picked up before like that …. or since
Delhi, Mumbai or London ?
My head says Mumbai , but my heart will always be in Delhi. London doesn’t feel like home yet.
Personal favorite from all Anek design products ?
My grey silk range of pillows and table runners
Favorite form – Kantha , blockprint , batik or Kalamkari ?
Kantha for its versatility. Works with both contemporary and traditional settings and each piece is a work of art.
Very tough since it keeps changing for me . Current favorites are Jonathan Adler for home and raw mango for sarees and Indian traditional wear.
Working with hubby and dad .
Families are always emotionally invested so there are a lot of emotions everywhere , everyday. Its more fights and more work. My dad respects the process and is super sincere, husband is totally efficient and quick . I am the lazy one and need a constant dose of motivation to get work done.
